THE PULLING POWER OF A LOCO…

Working as part of the Grantham Mallard Partnership, along with Carillion, Pinza Ltd and local authorities, we’ve just finished ‘Mallard – the story of speed’ weekend in Grantham which saw the iconic World Record holding steam locomotive ‘Mallard’ on display along with a buffet car from the 1930’s and a deltic diesel, Mallard’s successor.

Mallard finally arrives at Grantham – phew!

The event was the brainchild of Henry Cleary and was on and off many times but ultimately Henry’s persistence prevailed and such was the pulling power of this loco – which hasn’t been back to Grantham in over 50 years  and which is the nearest station to where it achieved its World Steam record just south of the town in 1938 – we had over 15,000 people on the site over the weekend! truly amazing and delightful to see.

After organising a corporate event for Lincolnshire County Council and South Kesteven District Council on the Friday, the site was then opened up to the public for a free viewing over the weekend which also included vintage vehicles, a photographic exhibition in the town centre and the local railway club’s model show. All elements plus the car-parks linked by a free vintage bus service.

All in all a fantastic weekend’s event which we’re proud to say went extremely well although left many of us extremely tired! Thanks as always to a great team of professionals including On Productions, The Event and Tent Co, Viking Signs and Anne Lucas Catering as well as the army of volunteer stewards whose help was invaluable.
We also received some great feedback via Twitter and email:

“I concur with the sentiments everyone has made. ‘Phenomenal’ is the only way to describe it and I congratulate all concerned for an excellent, eye-opening and well-run event!”- Nick Pygott, Editor The Railway Magazine

“First my I say Thank You to you and your team especially, Suzanne, on behalf of Grantham Canal Society,  for the excellent organisation of the Mallard at
Grantham Exhibition, which  ran without a hitch, and coped magnificently
with such a massive well ordered attendance.” – Tony Pitman, The Grantham Canal Partnership
